First Grade Magnet Focus: Family Ties
First graders have been learning the routines of the classroom. We are learning to work as a team. When they are following the rules, making good choices, wearing uniforms, turning in homework, demonstrating acts of kindness, working cooperatively, and doing their best work, they get to put fuzzballs in the jar. When the jar fills, the entire class earns a prize.
We are building our reading stamina. We add a minute per day to our reading time. We are currently reading for 30 minutes independently. We are building our number skills by counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's. We are strengthening our numeracy skills daily with fact practice, problem of the day, small group instruction, and centers. We have a daily intervention block to target the needs of our students. Please read daily at home, and ask your child if they brought home a book that we worked on in class! Our magnet unit is called Family Ties for this term. We are focusing on how we help at home, in school, and in our community. The children made poster boards of how each family member helped around the house. They drew or had photos of how they helped and wrote about the pictures. We read several books about school and community helpers. We had a sock drive and donated socks to Life Haven and a men's shelter to help our community.
